Get the most out of your attorney-client relationship

During your real estate litigation, it is important that you work with your attorney. In essence, you are in a partnership with a common goal to obtain favorable results in your case. As partners, you must both contribute to reach a favorable outcome.

What are the things that you should contribute to the process? Below are a few key contributions that you can make to aid your attorney in helping you, and to hopefully get the most out of your business relationship.

Honesty

In order to advocate for you properly, it is important that your attorney have all the facts. When you withhold certain facts, the missing information can actually hurt your case if the opposing party brings it to light during your case. It is best to be completely honest with your attorney, which is why you should take the time to select an attorney you can trust.

Timely information

Provide all information relevant to your case in a timely manner. If your attorney requests additional information, provide it quickly. When your attorney has to wait for information from you, it can stall your case and prolong your resolution. Should you have any questions about any documentation needed, discuss it with your attorney.

Communication

If you are not going to be able to attend a hearing, or you receive any information that relates to your case, be sure to share these things with your attorney as soon as possible. Also, keep in mind that your attorney most likely has additional clients and may not be available at all times. Try to be patient and schedule times to meet or speak when possible. However, during emergencies, definitely contact your attorney immediately.

As a knowledgeable party on real estate law, your attorney should be an excellent resource for you. However, you are your first and best advocate. Make sure that you do your part in your case so that your attorney can effectively do his or hers as well.
